The following is my column for the Trentonian this week.

Life Long Learning

Do you remember your first day of school and how excited you were? The learning process had begun, one that in actuality started during your early infant years and continued all through the education process. But even though you have finished school you realize that the learning process has not stopped. Even as adults we continue to learn, especially in this day and age of computers. Learning to navigate the worldwide web was not something most folks over the age of 40 learned to do in school. Learning is a life-long process.

Our faith journey is a life-long process as well. The Bible is a story of the people of God, a story of faith. The ancient prophets told their stories of faith to the people, stories that were then written down and became the basis for our Hebrew scriptures. Jesus, living in a different era, in a different time began a journey of faith that became the basis of Christianity. And Jesus was on a life-long learning process. In the gospel of Mark we have the story of the Syrophoenician’s woman. This woman taught Jesus. When she asked for healing for her daughter, Jesus brushed her off, but the woman replied with a quick retort that opened Jesus eyes to the mission that God has called him to. (Mark 7: 24-30)

We too are on a journey of faith. Many people have said that one can find God just as easily sitting on the shores of a lake or on the golf course. And indeed God is there, God is with us always. But if we want to continue to grow in faith, we need to be in dialogue with others about the nature and ways of God. That can happen in many ways but finding a place of worship that feeds you is one of the best ways I know. For here you can find a caring community that will support you through your life long process of growth. This is the world wide web of faith. Learn to use it and grow.

Our Seed Campaign is off to a good start!

In May seed packets containing $20 were handed out to the members of the congregation. They were asked to take the money and grow it over the summer. And grow they have.

Marion German is selling "meal deals" a Chili Dinner for two.

Edna Campney is selling delicious homemade pies

Linda Walt invited other investors to help her put on the Cold Plate Luncheon in July and is doing the same for August - next luncheon on August 3 - 11:30 to 1 PM. Cost $6 - (by the way it was a delicious meal - includes all you can eat salads, cold meats, rolls - many varieties - tea, coffee or cold drinks plus a dessert)

Scott Patterson is offering his skills fixing small engines (lawnmowers, etc.) and will be donating a portion of the fees to the church.

Alf Gibbons, a Real Estate Agent for Family Realty in Brighton is asking for referrals from the members and friends of Wooler United. In return he will donate 10% of his commission cheque from any sales resulting from these referrals to Wooler United. Just tell your friends that Wooler United recommended him - business cards are available at the church office. Share them around.

Roni Glenn is selling her artwork at an upcoming art show in Brighton.

Penny Jensen has made a series of 5 original pieces of art and had them made into charming note cards - 5 for $10.

More ideas are a brewing so stay tuned.

HOW OUR GARDEN GROWS!!!

A ‘SEED’ MONEY CAMPAIGN - SUMMER, 2009

LAST WEEK SEED PACKETS CONTAINING A $20 BILL WERE PASSED OUT.

(This money is not from the church funds but is an interest-free loan from an anonymous donor.) YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO TAKE THIS MONEY AND GROW IT, USING YOUR VARIOUS TALENTS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES. THE MONEY YOU ‘GROW’ WILL THEN BE RETURNED TO THE CHURCH. MONEY CAN BE RETURNED AT ANY TIME (THE SOONER THE BETTER!) BUT PEOPLE ARE ALSO ENCOURAGED TO CONTINUE GROWING OVER THE WHOLE SUMMER. A GROWTH CHART WILL BE KEPT TO RECORD HOW OUR GARDEN IS GROWING. PARTICIPATION IS NOT MANDATORY AND IF YOU WISH YOU CAN JUST RETURN THE MONEY IF YOU FEEL YOU CAN’T PARTICIPATE. IF YOU WERE NOT THERE AND WOULD LIKE A “SEED PACKET” PLEASE LET MARY KNOW.

AN OBVIOUS ONE: PLANT SOME VEGETABLES SEEDS/SEEDLINGS AND SELL THE PRODUCE.
USE THE MONEY TO BUY SUPPLIES FOR A CRAFT ITEM YOU THEN COULD SELL.
USE THE MONEY TO PLACE PRODUCE FLYERS (or buy gasoline, etc. ) AND OFFER YOUR TIME FOR BABYSITTING, GRASS CUTTING, OR SOME OTHER SERVICE
USE THE MONEY TO BUY BAKING SUPPLIES THEN SELL YOUR BAKING ( WE HAVE A YARD SALE COMING UP AND THE BAKING COULD BE SOLD THERE)
USE THE MONEY TO RENT A TABLE AT OUR YARD SALE AND SELL ALL THE THINGS YOU DON’T REALLY NEED – THEN DONATE 50% OF YOUR PROCEEDS TO THE CHURCH!
ARRANGE AN OUTING TO A SPECIAL EVENT AND DRIVE FOLKS THERE (FOR A DONATION)
POOL YOUR MONEY WITH SOMEONE ELSE AND OFFER TO CATER A MEAL, OR HAVE BARBEQUE AT YOUR HOME, OR A POOL PARTY, GAMES NIGHT ETC. (THE SKY’S THE LIMIT!)

CONSIDER IDEAS THAT WILL PROMOTE WOOLER UNITED CHURCH AS A FRIENDLY PLACE TO COME AND HAVE FUN.
HOW ABOUT PUTTING ON A CHILDREN’S CARNIVAL?
A GAMES NIGHT FOR ALL AGES? A MOVIE NIGHT?

WE CAN ALSO HAVE A MARKETPLACE WHERE GOODS COULD BE SOLD – AT THE YARD SALE – THE CAR SHOW IN AUGUST OR AFTER CHURCH ONE SUNDAY.

Bible Study Questions for the Week of January 12: These are some of the questions we will be looking at this week at our Bible Study Group - Wednesday, January 14 - 10:00 a.m.

• With whom do you identify most in 1 Samuel 3:1–10, (11–20) and
John 1:43–51? Reflect on some times in your life when God was calling but you did not recognize what was happening and needed someone else to help you see it. Have there been times when you knew someone else was being called by God and you were not? How did you feel then and now about that moment?

• Both the passages from 1 Samuel and John are about discovering and recognizing the presence of God. When do you recall this happening for you as a child? as a youth? and various times as you grew older?

• How does the transition of leadership happen in your community? Who are the “Elis” who acknowledge their time of leadership, for good or ill, is over and help those who are younger hear God’s call to them?

• How does Psalm 139, with its affirmation of ourselves as fearfully and wonderfully made, speak to Paul’s advice to the Corinthian community? How do we glorify God with our bodies in a society that is both sex-obsessed and fearful of intimacy? In an age in which science increasingly sees a correlation between body/matter and energy/spirit, what does it mean for us to honour our bodies as temples of God’s spirit?

• God’s call changes lives. In 1 Corinthians 6:12–20, Paul asserts that those who respond to God’s call find their lives changed in many respects. How do Christians find their lives changed? How have you found your life changed?

• Do you find it easier to discern and explore God’s call in community or in solitude?

My name is Mary Hyatt Gibbons. I am a diaconal minister and arrived at Wooler United Church in October, 2008. I was commissioned in 1993 and have served 4 pastoral charges since that time. I am really enjoying the Quinte region and the wonderful congregation of Wooler United.
We welcome new folks to join us in worship on Sunday morning or at any of our regular programs.
